[00:00] Why Gratitude Can Feel Like Another To-Do
When life is full and your emotional capacity is drained, even gratitude can feel like another expectation. In this episode, we talk about how the pressure to “feel thankful” can sometimes create guilt instead of joy. Real gratitude begins not with effort, but with space to be.
Psalm 23:2-3 reminds us, “He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul.”
Rest is part of the spiritual process. Rest is where gratitude begins to grow again.
[02:00] How Can You Break Free from the Pressure to “Feel Grateful”?
Sometimes we feel like we should be grateful, even when we’re emotionally numb. It can be helpful to notice where this message came from: a faith tradition, a parent, or a voice in our head that says we’re ungrateful if we’re not cheerful.
We can release the pressure to “be grateful” and trade performance-based spirituality for grace-based gratitude.
[04:00] What Did Jesus Model About Rest and Refueling?
Jesus regularly stepped away from the crowds. He didn’t heal every person, didn’t answer every question, didn’t meet every need. His rhythm of rest was a spiritual necessity, not a luxury.
If the Son of God needed rest, we certainly do too. Burnout blocks our ability to access gratitude. When we pause to refill our souls, gratitude becomes a natural overflow, not a forced discipline.
[06:00] Could a Lack of Emotional Capacity Be Blocking Gratitude?
If you feel numb, emotionally flat, or like you’re just going through the motions, it doesn’t mean you're broken or ungrateful. It means you may be emotionally maxed out.
We can normalize the experience of not feeling thankful, especially when we’re carrying emotional weight. Gratitude needs room to breathe, and that means tending to our nervous systems first.
[08:00] Why We Can’t Gratitude Our Way Out of Burnout
Trying to force gratitude during exhaustion is like trying to run on an empty tank. In fact, bypassing our real needs with a “just be grateful” mindset actually deepens burnout. Instead, we can take a gentler path: start with acknowledging your capacity, name what needs support, and return to gratitude as a response to presence, not performance.
Matthew 11:28 speaks directly to this: “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
[10:00] How Can You Notice God’s Presence in Small, Overlooked Moments?
Gratitude often shows up in quiet, ordinary places: a moment of stillness, a sip of hot coffee, a smile from your child. These tiny gifts are whispers of God's goodness.
Alicia encourages us to tune our hearts to notice, not in a performative way, but in a soul-honest way. It’s less about doing gratitude and more about seeing grace.
[12:00] Gratitude as a Response, Not a Requirement
We can reframe gratitude as a byproduct of connection with God—not something to force.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
But that doesn’t mean you must feel thankful in every moment. Gratitude grows from the soil of grace, not guilt.
[14:00] What Can You Do to Rediscover the Gift of Gratitude in Overwhelming Seasons?
Instead of demanding more from yourself, Alicia invites you to ask:
- What do I actually need right now?
- Where is God already at work in this moment?
- What small gifts am I overlooking?
She reminds us that when we choose to rest in God’s presence, gratitude comes, not because we’re trying harder, but because we’re being still enough to see.
