[02:53] Why Bible verses on love are important when we need comfort
Many of us have a head knowledge of God's love, meaning that we’ve heard the bible verses about love, but have a hard time being emotionally confident in God’s love when hard times strike. For example, if you've gone to church, you probably have heard the idea that God loves you. However, we must learn how to step into God’s love, encounter it, and let God’s love absorb into our soul.
God's love is the starting place for empathy for ourselves and empathy for others. When we're going through hard times, God's love is the prerequisite for self care and being able to care for others. If we’re not confident in God’s love for us we can be less motivated to stop and take care of ourselves. In some cases even, we’re not wanting to take care of others because sometimes we're in situations where people are hurting us or it's hard to even imagine responding in love to something that we're going through.
Seeking comfort by focusing on Bible verses about love is also important because knowing we cannot fully experience others’ love without being confident in God’s foundation of love for us. In other words, we truly can't understand what it means to feel love from another person if that love from God hasn't already filled us.
We are limited in our ability to love ourselves because we are very well aware of our own faults. There are times when we can't see beyond the moment of our own shame and frustrations. When the foundation of God's love is solid, we can operate from a completely different sphere. We can lean into curiosity and discomfort because we are rooted firmly in God’s love. We can more easily overlook offenses. We don’t need to prove ourselves or to seek our identity in other’s perceptions.
In addition, knowing that we are loved by God (and being familiar with Bible verses on love) brings much needed assurance and comfort when we need to surrender a difficult situation to Him. It also allows us to move towards the path of acceptance when we know that the same being that orchestrates and holds the whole world in His hand is the one who has our best interests at heart.
Sometimes God’s love is the only thing that can be our anchor when everything feels like it’s spinning out of control. We need to be able to lean into God and know that His love is what will get us through it all.
[06:18] Studying Bible verses on God’s love in the “I Am Loved Bible Study Course”
This episode is being released around Valentine’s Day, and this time of year is a great opportunity to dig deeper into love Bible verses and the comfort and security that God’s love brings.
That’s why I wanted to share about my very popular Bible study on love–the “I Am Loved Bible Study Course”–where you’ll find a powerful deep-dive on how to better understand God’s love and how to build your life on the comfort of God’s love for you.
This bible study is an eight week study that consists of a different verse each day. We really dig deep into each verse through a specific Bible study method I have created called the Spiritual Growth Rhythm. If you want to learn more about the Spiritual Growth Rhythm check out episode 51, episode 52, and episode 53, but essentially it is a highly powerful method that I've been teaching for years and thousands of women and even other churches have used this method as a way to study God's Word in a consistent, effective way.
The first step of the Spiritual Growth Rhythm is to receive. This is probably 70% of the time that we spend in God's word each day, receiving his word, promises, and truth of it. There's a five step process that helps break down how to read it and apply these Bible verses about love to your life and make it come alive.
The next step in the Spiritual Growth Rhythm is to recognize. This is essential because if we don't recognize how God is presently active in our daily lives, then it can be hard to believe a theoretical concept like being fully loved by God.
Ask yourself these questions:
- In the last 24-48 hours, how have you seen God show up?
- How has He answered a prayer or provided in any way?
The last step in the Spiritual Growth Rhythm is to release. After we've received this truth from God, what are the things that are still holding us back from being able to fully lean into God's love? During this step, we write down those things that we still need to surrender and let go of to be able to trust God.
Each day in the “I Am Loved” Study contains a specific worksheet where you read and apply a Bible verse on God using the Spiritual Growth Rhythm. Each week has a different theme around God’s love: Week One’s theme is God's love is our foundation; Week Two is God's love is constant; Week Three we talk about how God's love is a filter, and then the last week’s theme is God's love is a gift.
Each of the verses for those weeks fall under those different themes and build on each other. You need the foundation of God's love before you can understand how it's constant and how you can use it as a filter. Having this foundation will also help you understand why it's such a gift for us to be able to give to others.
Along with the daily Spiritual Growth Rhythm Worksheets and Bible verses on love, the “I Am Loved Bible Study Course” includes four devotionals and 24 extra verses that you can look up to go along with these different topics. There's also a weekly check in page where you can share what you learned and any challenges you faced in studying God’s word, among other things.
At the end of the study you’ll find a coaching exercise to help process the weekly concepts of God’s love in a deeper way and begin to get some resolution. There's even a coloring page that we have in there that encourages meditation on some of the verses.
Lastly, you will find a weekly video teaching from me that dives into that week's specific verses. The point of that is for you to study God's Word all week long, to have the five days of consistent study, and at the end of the week to have someone else's input on what they learned during the week. Each lesson is dripped out one week at a time so that you can be in God's word and receive from Him first and then you can watch the video and get some more commentary.
If you are interested in doing a study like this, whether it's Valentine's Day when you're listening to this or not, make sure to join us for the I Am Loved Bible Study.
[12:45] Bible Verse on Love #1: Psalm 86:5
Psalm 86:5 talks about how God is so good, so present, and so ready to forgive. I believe that is an essential part of stepping into God's love is understanding His character. He’s here with us and for us, and He is not meant to harm us. He is ready to shower us with His love when we ask Him for help.
Questions to reflect on:
- Are we willing to wait in trust?
- Are we willing to ask him for help?
- Are we willing to rest in that place of expectant hope just waiting for him to answer?
[15:50] Bible Verse on Love #2: Psalm 23:4-6
If you’ve known Jesus for a while, Psalm 23:4-6 will probably be familiar to you. It’s a commonly used verse about the concept of God walking with us, especially through hard times. It carries this idea of when he's with us, we have a reason to not be afraid, we can understand his character, we can understand what he's doing. This Bible verse about love always gives me great comfort and allows me to release the fear that I have that surrounds me when I'm in the middle of a difficult situation. In these times, we can be sure that He is pursuing us with His love, and that our cups continue to overflow with blessings.
Questions for reflection:
- What attitude will we choose to sit in during times of hardship?
- What truths about God can we choose to focus on when we need comfort?
[19:11] Bible Verse on Love #3: Romans 5:3-5
Romans 5:3-5 is a great verse on God's love, specifically when we're walking through hard times. This verse reminds us that we can know that God's love is constant and that love doesn't always look like giving us what we want in the moment. Love doesn't always look like constantly stepping from one cloud of bliss to the next. God’s love gives us room to be strengthened and stretched, and through that strengthening and stretching, we get the gifts of things like endurance and character. Character is what gives us even more hope in our salvation.
[22:43] Bible Verse on Love #4: Psalm 42:7-8
Another verse on God's love that's awesome for bringing comfort is Psalm 42:7-8, which touches on the subject of life’s duality. We can see the difficulties, and we can also see His promises and His truth. The promises and the love that he showers on us through these darker times are our connection points with Him. Each day, the Lord pours his unfailing love upon us. This connection point allows us to look above the storm, to be able to not only pay attention to the waves that surround us, but to refocus our mind and find comfort from the reality that he's there. He's with us. He's standing right next to us, and it's going to be okay.
A question for reflection:
- What are we going to let our heart believe and stand on?
[24:42] Bible Verse on Love #5: Psalm 59:16-17
Psalm 59:16-17 is a great verse for understanding God's love and meditating on His truth when we need comfort. The evidence of His love and care in the past is what gives us a place to praise Him and access His love in the present, a place that we can stand on when the storm is raging. This verse reflects having a consistent relationship with God, connecting to Him everyday and paying attention to how He is at work in our daily lives. Having this type of relationship allows us to rest assured that He is our safe place because we have experienced that no matter the circumstances, He has always been our safe place.
