Ep 373: What Is Emotional Regulation (And Why It’s More Than “Calming Yourself Down”)
What if emotional regulation isn't about calming yourself down—but becoming available to hear God more clearly? So many of us have been taught to suppress our emotions, push through them, or simply “get over it.” But that's not how God designed us to heal.
In this episode, I explain what emotional regulation really is, why it's the missing step before emotional processing, and how learning to prepare your body, mind, and soul can help you respond with greater wisdom instead of reacting automatically. You'll also discover why emotional regulation is a spiritual practice that helps you stay connected to God even in the middle of difficult emotions.

[00:00] Emotional Regulation Is More Than Simply Calming Down
For years, I thought managing my emotions simply meant trying to calm myself down. If I was anxious, frustrated, or overwhelmed, the goal was to stop feeling that way as quickly as possible. But I've realized emotional regulation is so much more than that. It's about becoming emotionally available enough to understand what's really happening inside.
When we immediately tell ourselves to “just calm down,” we often skip over what our emotions are trying to tell us. Regulation isn't dismissing our feelings or pretending they're gone. It's creating enough space that we can actually begin to process them with God.
[03:00] Why Healthy Emotions Aren't Emotionless Emotions
Many of us grew up believing that healthy Christians shouldn't have strong emotions. But that's not what we see in Scripture, and it's not how God designed our nervous systems to work.
Our bodies naturally move between moments of activation and moments of rest. Even Jesus experienced deep emotion throughout His ministry. The goal isn't to eliminate emotional highs and lows—it's learning how to stay connected to God as we move through them.
This is key: Emotional regulation isn't about suppressing emotion; it's about becoming emotionally available.
[05:00] The Missing Step Before Emotional Processing
One of the biggest mistakes we make is trying to process an emotion before we're actually ready.
When we're flooded with anxiety, anger, fear, or overwhelm, our minds aren't able to think clearly. We're reacting instead of reflecting. That's why I teach what I call Emotional Prep, the process of preparing your body, mind, and soul before trying to understand what's underneath the emotion. Emotional regulation is one important part of that preparation.
[08:00] Why Emotional Prep and Emotional Processing Work Together
I like to think of emotional regulation like taking medicine for a headache. It helps relieve the immediate discomfort, but it doesn't explain why the headache happened in the first place.
Emotional regulation helps restore your ability to think clearly. Emotional processing helps you discover what's really going on underneath. We need both. Regulation without processing may bring temporary relief, but lasting healing happens when we slow down enough to invite God into the deeper story.
[10:00] How Regulation Changes Your Body, Mind, and Relationship with God
Emotional regulation affects every part of who we are.
In our bodies, it looks like moving from feeling flooded and reactive to feeling more settled and present. In our minds, it allows our racing thoughts to slow down so we can begin asking better questions instead of immediately defending ourselves or assigning blame.
Spiritually, emotional regulation doesn't make God speak more clearly; it simply removes the internal noise so we can hear Him more clearly. Like tuning a radio, God's voice hasn't changed. We're simply able to receive His direction without so much emotional static getting in the way.
[13:00] Learning to Calm and Quiet Your Soul
One passage that beautifully captures emotional regulation is Psalm 131:1–2 (NLT):
“Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don't concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp. Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother's milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.”
I love the picture David gives here. A weaned child hasn't stopped needing comfort; they've simply learned to receive comfort in a different way.
I remember walking through that process with each of my four children as I weaned them from breastfeeding. Every one of them weaned differently, and what helped wasn't forcing the process. It was gently helping them discover new ways to be comforted.
That's such a beautiful picture of emotional regulation. God isn't asking us to stop feeling. He's inviting us to learn how to receive His comfort in ways that help our hearts become settled enough to hear Him.
[18:00] Emotional Regulation Is About Shepherding, Not Controlling Yourself
For so many years I thought emotional maturity meant controlling myself better. Now I see it differently.
Emotional regulation is really about learning to shepherd your inner world. Just as a shepherd gently guides and cares for sheep, we're invited to care for our hearts with wisdom instead of criticism. Isaiah 26:3 reminds us:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
As we learn to quiet the internal noise in our bodies, minds, and souls, we become more available to experience God's peace, not because we've earned it, but because we've created space to receive it.
