Ep 371: I’ve Changed… Now Who Am I? Navigating the Emotions of Midlife
Have you ever looked at your life and thought, I've changed…but now who am I? Midlife brings so many transitions—our bodies change, our relationships evolve, our roles shift, and the things that once defined us begin to look different.
In this episode, I share some of the emotions so many women experience during this season, including grief, relief, fear, and uncertainty. We talk about why midlife isn't about trying to become the person you used to be, but discovering who God is inviting you to become next.
If you've been wondering what this midlife season is really about as a Christian woman, I hope this conversation encourages you to embrace it with curiosity, courage, and hope.

[00:00] Why Midlife Isn't About Going Back—It's About Becoming
A conversation with friends sparked an unexpected realization. While someone wished they could be twenty again, I found myself thinking, Not me. Those years were filled with uncertainty, figuring out who I was, learning how to be a wife and mom, and constantly wondering if I was doing enough. As much as I miss certain seasons, I don't actually want to go back.
Instead, I'm beginning to see midlife as a gift. Yes, my body is changing, my roles are changing, and life feels different than it once did. But instead of asking God to help me become who I used to be, I'm asking a different question: Who are You inviting me to become now?
That word—becoming—has become one of my favorite ways to think about this season. God isn't finished with us. He's inviting us into something new.
[04:00] The Questions That Surface When Life Finally Gets Quiet
One thing I've noticed in coaching conversations is that many women feel blindsided by midlife. They tell me, “I've handled life well for years. Why do these emotions suddenly feel so much bigger?”
Part of it is that life becomes quieter. We may have fewer parenting responsibilities, more margin in our schedules, or simply more space to notice what's been happening beneath the surface all along. The questions we once pushed aside suddenly become impossible to ignore.
I've noticed this in my own relationship with God. Recently, I found myself telling Him that parts of my spiritual life felt flat. Not because I was angry with Him, but because I wanted more. That honest conversation became an invitation to let Him awaken places in my heart that had grown comfortable.
Sometimes the emotions we notice aren't problems to solve; they're invitations to deeper growth.
[09:00] Grieving the Life You Thought You'd Have
One of the emotions we don't talk about enough in midlife is grief.
Sometimes it's grief over dreams that never happened, a marriage that didn't come, children you hoped for, a relationship that ended, or a life that looks very different than you expected. Other times it's grief over good things that have simply changed.
I think about my own children. I'll never again have toddlers running through the house singing silly songs. I'll never be that version of myself who was raising little kids. That realization carries sadness, even though I love the season we're in now.
One client shared that she didn't feel she had permission to ask God hard questions. She believed it would be disrespectful to tell Him she was disappointed or confused. But healing began when she realized that bringing her grief honestly before God wasn't a lack of faith—it was an act of trust.
One verse that comes to mind is Psalm 62:8:
“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”
God isn't asking us to hide our grief. He's inviting us to bring it to Him.
[14:00] Why the Emotion of Relief Can Feel Surprisingly Uncomfortable in Midlife
As strange as it sounds, another emotion that shows up in midlife is relief.
There's a freedom that comes with realizing I don't have to prove myself anymore. I don't have to attend every event, fix every problem, or say yes simply because I have time. There are moments now when I can sit outside with a cup of coffee, spend time with God, and simply breathe.
But relief often comes with guilt.
If you've spent decades hustling, producing, and carrying responsibility, slowing down can feel uncomfortable. It almost feels wrong. Yet maybe this space isn't something to apologize for. Maybe it's a gift God is giving us so we can hear Him more clearly and prepare for what's next.
[17:00] Two Different Kinds of Fear—and Which One God Wants You to Follow
Fear never completely disappears. It simply changes as we move through different seasons.
One of the most helpful things I've learned is the difference between two Hebrew words for fear: pachad and yirah. Pachad is the kind of fear that protects us. It's the wisdom that reminds us not to repeat unhealthy patterns or ignore important boundaries.
Yirah is different. It's the awe-filled fear we experience when God invites us into something bigger than ourselves. It's stepping toward the unknown, trusting that even though we don't feel ready, He's already there.
Lately I've sensed God stirring my heart toward serving a group of people I never expected. I don't yet know what that looks like, but I've been learning that sometimes the next faithful step is simply saying yes before you have all the answers.
[22:00] Don't Let Your Inner Critic Talk You Out of Your Next Season
As we begin dreaming again, another voice often gets louder—the inner critic.
It whispers things like, You're too old. You missed your chance. That's selfish. Someone else could do it better.
I remember feeling that when an opportunity came up to travel to Italy and study urban sketching with an artist I'd followed for years. My first thought wasn't excitement—it was guilt. Was this selfish? Shouldn't I be spending my time and money somewhere else?
My husband looked at me and simply said, “Honey, you have to go.”
That one decision didn't just lead to an unforgettable trip. It became the place where I met the team that now helps lead my international retreats. Looking back, I realize God was doing something far bigger than I could have imagined. Sometimes one courageous yes opens doors you never could have planned yourself.
[27:00] Midlife Is an Orientation, Not the Finish Line
One illustration I've been thinking about lately is that our forties and fifties are almost like the “juvenile years” of becoming older. We're entering a brand-new season we've never lived before.
It reminds me of when my husband and I traveled to Sudan on a mission trip. Before going into the remote villages, we spent several days in Nairobi. At first, I didn't understand why. Later I realized those days helped us acclimate—to the culture, the time zone, and what life in Africa would be like before stepping into something completely unfamiliar.
Maybe midlife is a little like that.
Maybe God is using this season to acclimate us for what's ahead. Instead of seeing it as an ending, we can begin seeing it as preparation.
[30:00] Listening to the Emotions God Is Using to Shape You
Rather than pushing uncomfortable emotions away, what if we became curious about them?
What emotion keeps showing up lately? Grief? Relief? Fear? Excitement? Uncertainty?
Instead of trying to fix it immediately, what if you simply brought it before God and asked, What are You showing me through this?
That's exactly what we're exploring this month inside the Emotional Confidence Club. Together we're learning how to recognize the emotions that surface during midlife, understand what they're trying to tell us, and respond with biblical truth instead of fear or shame.
The goal isn't to have every answer. It's to become the woman God is faithfully shaping one step at a time.
