379: “How Do I Walk Through This Well?” Finding Emotional Clarity When Life Gets Complicated
What if you’re doing your best to follow God, but you honestly don’t know what to do?
Life doesn't always come with a clear five-step answer. Sometimes we're caught between our emotions, what we believe God is asking us to do, what other people are telling us, and the patterns we've relied on for years—and we're left wondering, How do I actually walk through this well?
In this episode, we talk about what it looks like to slow down when life feels complicated, untangle the different voices and emotions involved, and find a wise next step instead of feeling like you have to figure everything out on your own.

[00:00] When You Don't Know How to Walk Through Something Well
Sometimes life puts us in situations where there isn't an obvious answer. You can love Jesus, want to honor Him, and still feel confused about what to say, what boundary to set, or what decision to make.
Instead of pressuring yourself to figure everything out immediately, there is value in slowing down and asking, “What is actually happening here, and what do I need to understand before I decide what to do?”
[02:00] Why We Sometimes Need Someone Outside the Situation
When we're emotionally involved in something, it can be incredibly difficult to see the situation clearly. We may be carrying guilt, fear, anger, people-pleasing patterns, or assumptions about what we're responsible for.
Sometimes you don't need someone to tell you what to do. You need a safe place to talk through what's happening so you can separate what is yours to carry from what isn't.
[04:00] You Can Love Jesus and Still Not Know What to Do
There can be an unspoken pressure to believe that if we're mature enough spiritually, we'll always know exactly what to do. But that's simply not true.
You can be walking closely with God and still need wisdom, perspective, support, and time to process. Not knowing what to do doesn't mean you're failing God.

[07:00] “You Can't Read the Label From Inside the Jar”
Sometimes we're simply too close to a situation to understand what's happening clearly. What feels like responsibility might actually be guilt. What feels like compassion might actually be people-pleasing. What feels like wisdom might actually be fear.
Getting outside perspective can help you step back and look at the whole picture instead of making decisions from the middle of the emotional experience.
[08:00] Tell the Whole Truth About What's Happening Inside
Before we can figure out what to do, we sometimes need to be honest about what we're actually feeling. “I'm angry. I'm disappointed. I'm hurt. I'm ashamed. I'm afraid. Here's the part I don't really want to admit.”
Those emotions aren't something we need to hide from God. Giving ourselves permission to acknowledge what's happening inside can help us understand what is really driving our reactions.
[09:00] Look Beneath the Emotion for What's Really Driving It
Sometimes the situation on the surface isn't the whole story. Underneath our emotions can be deeper questions about whether we're worthy, safe, loved, accepted, or responsible for someone else's happiness.
For example, setting a boundary might feel terrifying because underneath it we're asking, “If this person gets upset with me, does that mean I'm a bad person?” Getting curious about those deeper beliefs can change the way we approach the situation.
[11:00] Sometimes the First Step Is Calming Your Body
When we're emotionally activated, our bodies are responding to what they perceive as a threat. Trying to make a major decision in that state can make everything feel even more confusing.
Sometimes the first step isn't figuring out the answer. It's creating enough safety and calm in your body that you can actually think, listen, pray, and respond from a grounded place.
[16:00] The Everyday Situations That Can Leave Us Stuck
These complicated situations aren't always dramatic. Maybe you're navigating an adult child's choices, tension in your marriage, an aging parent who needs more help, or a repeated situation at work that keeps frustrating you.
You may find yourself asking, “Is this mine to fix? Should I say something? Should I set a boundary? Am I being selfish?” These are exactly the moments when slowing down can help you understand what's really happening instead of automatically responding from an old pattern.
[18:00] Ask: What Is My Next Faithful Step?
You don't have to know exactly how everything is going to work out. You can simply ask, “What is my next faithful step?”
Maybe that step is having a conversation. Maybe it's setting a boundary, getting support, resting, gathering more information, or simply taking some time to process before you act. You don't need the entire roadmap to take the next step God is putting in front of you.
