  1. Audrey, yes, I agree. The switch to becoming a “teen” doesn’t just happen… it’s a slow transition, isn’t it? Thanks for sharing!

  2. I think a lot of this is even applicable (on a different level) to my 7 year old. He is at that first stage of independence and the beginnings of peer pressure. Definitely things I need to keep in mind as he grows.

  3. Hi there! Thank you so much for sharing! I’m so glad it encouraged you to keep doing what you’re doing! 🙂

  4. As we’ve been worrying about one of our teen nieces, these are exactly the things I’ve been keeping in mind and talking with other family about in terms of what we can offer to help her get through some trying times. I appreciate seeing this post today and knowing that I’m not too far off, since I’ve never actually tried to raise a teen in any day-to-day way before! 🙂

  5. These are some really important things to remember as we parent our teens. I try to do many of these things. I loved the “What did you learn?” question. Teens are old enough to think things out and that question could really help.

  6. My oldest, a boy, is 14 and this entire post rings so true with me. It’s a hard transition. We’ve found ourselves saying, “This is a situation that requires adult clarity and knowledge, but you’re just 14 so it’s hard to understand.” I’m glad God gives grace, all the way around, in this transition time. Thanks to Connie for the post, and thank you for sharing it with us at Grace & Truth!

  7. Connie wrote this article for us and it really blessed me too. Oh my goodness… I completely relate to what you’re saying, Elizabeth! My oldest is 12 and, for me, this past six months has been a huge learning curve for all of us as we discover what our new relationship looks like. It is so so hard to transition to this new way of relating! I am trying to just let go, a little at a time, and looking for areas where I can let him spread his wings a little and make some decisions by himself.

  8. I am just entering the teen years with my oldest, she’s 13. It has been a game-changer the past year or so with her. We’re both learning our relationship is different. I am guilty of still treating her as a child sometimes b/c that is how it’s been. I needed the reminder that to help her grow I need to start treating her differently. It’s so hard sometimes! I found you on the Grace and Truth linkup. Thanks for sharing!

  9. Teens certainly are in a different stage than childhood! We have two here & appreciate the tips 🙂
