384: Why Do I Feel Guilty Setting Boundaries in Relationships—Even When I Know I Need One?
Whether you’re navigating difficult family dynamics, feeling resentful about always saying yes, or dreading a hard conversation, setting boundaries can feel much more complicated than simply saying no.
In this episode, I’m exploring the connection between guilt, Christian love, and boundaries.
How do you know when guilt is worth listening to—and when it’s keeping you stuck? And how can you honor God and care for others without ignoring what’s happening inside you?

[00:00] Why Setting Boundaries Gets Harder Around the Holidays
The holidays can bring joy and connection, but they can also bring strained relationships and expectations that leave us feeling overwhelmed.
When you want to love others well but aren’t sure you can keep saying yes, it can be difficult to know how to move forward.
[03:00] When It Feels Easier to Just Put Up With It
Sometimes it’s easier to keep the peace than risk an uncomfortable conversation. We tell ourselves we can tolerate the situation, avoid the person, or quietly adjust our expectations.
But when we continually push aside what isn’t working, the tension doesn’t necessarily disappear.
pssst…
You shouldn’t have to choose between being kind and being honest about what you need in relationships. ❤️
I get it–setting a boundary can feel a lot more complicated than just “say no” or “stop worrying about what they think.”
Especially when it’s easier to deal with your own frustration than risk upsetting someone else.
So you keep saying “It’s fine” when it’s really not. (Ugh… been there! 😅)
Here’s the good news: Boundaries are biblical, and you can learn to speak up and share your limits with honesty and kindness.
And if you’ve never learned how? No worries. (Most of us haven’t!)
Give me about 50 minutes, and I’ll teach you a simple, three-step way to navigate hard conversations with confidence, kindness and less guilt.
You deserve to know how to set healthy boundaries without guilt… let me give you the tools to do just that.

[05:00] What I Learned From a Friendship That Needed a Boundary
I share a personal experience that challenged me to address an unhealthy dynamic instead of avoiding conflict.
Even when we care about someone and genuinely want to help, we have to recognize when a relationship needs something to change.
[07:00] Are You Serving Out of Love or Trying to Be Liked?
For years, I struggled with the connection between making others happy and feeling accepted.
Saying yes, volunteering, and doing what was expected often brought approval, but that isn’t the same as serving from a place of genuine love.
There’s a difference between trying to earn someone’s acceptance and allowing your love for God to shape how you care for others. Recognizing what’s motivating our choices can help us understand why saying no feels so difficult.
[09:00] Does Christian Love Mean Always Saying Yes?
As Christians, we’re called to love sacrificially, but that doesn’t mean every request requires a yes.
At the same time, we can’t assume that every uncomfortable situation means we need to establish a boundary. Learning to discern what love looks like in each relationship takes more than following a blanket rule about when to say yes or no.
[10:00] What Are You Really Afraid of Losing?
Setting a boundary can bring the possibility of disappointment, disapproval, or changes in a relationship.
When we already have so much on our plates, risking tension with someone we care about can feel like more than we want to handle. Understanding what we fear might happen can help us recognize why we keep putting off a conversation we know we need to have.
[12:00] Does Feeling Guilty Mean You’re Doing Something Wrong?
Guilt can leave us questioning ourselves, especially when we want our choices to honor God. But feeling guilty doesn’t automatically mean we’re doing something wrong.
There’s an important distinction between the kind of conviction that helps us recognize when we’re off track and the kind of condemnation that makes us question who we are. Before assuming guilt means we shouldn’t set a boundary, we can take time to understand where that feeling is coming from.
[14:00] What Is Your Discomfort Trying to Tell You?
Recurring resentment or feeling responsible for someone else’s happiness may be signs that something needs your attention.
That doesn’t automatically mean you need to set a boundary or ask someone else to change. Rather than immediately trying to fix the relationship or push past your discomfort, there’s an opportunity to get honest with God about what’s happening inside you.
Start by noticing where you’ve been telling yourself, “It’s easier if I just deal with it,” and invite God to show you what love looks like in that relationship.
