What Is Prayer, and Why Are Powerful Daily Prayers So Important?
The Bible is clear that we–mere mortals!–have the power to shape destinies and move mountains on behalf of our loved ones (James 5:16) through humble, heartfelt connection with God through prayer.
The Bible says that the prayer of a righteous man (or woman) does much. (James 5:16?)
But what is prayer?
- Prayer is simply communication–a conversation–between us and God.
- Prayer is accessible to any one at any time;
- Prayer allows us to connect deeply with God about any subject;
- Prayer is how God tells us to let go of our fears and pent up emotions;
- Prayer allows us to fight for the truth and to claim it for a specific situation;
- Prayer gives us fresh perspective, especially during a difficult life circumstance
- Prayer gives us the opportunity to support our friends and family behind the scenes as we lift every corner of their lives up to His guidance;
- Prayer teaches us to wait expectantly, knowing that He will answer (yes, no or wait) and that it will be for our best;
- Prayer helps us to be content with His best answer (based on His omnipotence) instead of demanding our own (based on our shortsightedness);
- Prayer changes not only the person we're praying for, but prayer changes us–regardless of what the answer to the prayer is.
Through prayer we can:
- bring healing
- protect our friends and family members, and
- change the world!
Next to salvation itself, prayer is one of the best gifts God gave his children!
Why A Powerful Prayer Life Is a Problem for So Many Christians
But here's the problem: Prayer is a gift that so many of us never ever open. Why?
- We're scared of prayer because we don't quite understand how to have a powerful prayer life.
- We're confused about what prayer is and prayer feels mysterious and strange.
- We've tried praying before but became quickly frustrated when our “way” wasn't happening.
- Or, we believe in the power of prayer, but we find ourselves too busy make prayer a priority.
However, as moms and women of God in a world quickly going down the tubes, we no longer have the luxury of not fighting for ourselves, our families and our nation through prayer.
The enemy is actively attacking our kids especially and we simply must be praying. Regularly.
Why Is Bible Study an Important Part of Powerful Daily Prayers?
The main way God speaks to us is through his love letter, the Bible.
We can know God's perspective on a given situation because of what is written in the Bible.
That's why the #1 way to have powerful daily prayers is to regularly read, understand and apply Bible verses to our lives.
Bible study gives us a glimpse into God's perspective on a situation, which allows us to guide our prayers toward His will. This is so important!

2 Other Essential Parts of Powerful Daily Prayers
First, powerful prayers are founded on a personal relationship with Christ.
God says that we're all separated from Him without Christ's redemption (Romans 3:23).
So if we want to access the power of prayer, we first need to be in right standing with God (which we can never do enough to earn and only comes through God's grace-filled gift of salvation through Jesus) (Ephesians 2:5-8).
If we're not in a committed relationship with Jesus and praying with God's will in mind for the situation, then our words are empty and powerless.
But the good news is that God wants to have a relationship with you! He wants to show you how to communicate with Him every day through His word and through prayer, and He bring purpose, meaning and hope into your life.
Discover more here about how you can have a relationship with God.
Second, we must believe that our prayers are important and that they will accomplish God's plan.
We must pray regularly, with an open heart, and with a conviction that our prayers are making a difference.
James 5:16 may be a familiar verse: “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”
But do we believe that–deep down in our souls? Have we allowed that truth to fire us up to the vibrant prayer life we long for?
Or what about this Bible verse from Hebrews 11:1: “Faith shows the reality of what we hope for, it is the evidence of the things we cannot see.”
Do we believe that God will answer our prayers? Do we pray with faith, confidently believing that if we pray according to His will, He will do miracles?
The good news is that you don't have to have perfect faith to pray. Jesus says in Matthew 17:20 that if we simply need faith as small as a mustard seed in order to have powerful prayers.
You simply need to have a heart that's willing to learn. A heart that says, “I know you're calling me to this, and so I know you'll teach me how to do this.”
What if I'm Too Busy and Have No Time for Prayer?
I totally understand. Even if you agree that praying powerful prayers is important, you already feel overwhelmed and exhausted.
You feel like if you have to fit in one more thing you're simply going to explode.
Can I lighten your load here? We don't need to try to “fit” prayer into our lives. We just need to adjust a few things.

6 Secrets for a More Powerful Prayer Life
1) Make a plan.
Here are some great books for developing prayer lists for the ones you love:
A Wife's 40-Day Fasting and Prayer Journal: A Guide to Strategic PrayerThe Power of a Praying® Wife
The Battle Plan for Prayer: From Basic Training to Targeted Strategies
The Power of a Praying® Parent
2) Pick a consistent time.
Like the main character in the movie War Room (another great prayer resource I'd recommend!), I've set up an area in my bedroom closet where I go to pray every morning. I have a list of prayers I go through, plus what ever is on my mind.
See inside my “war room” in this video (subscribe).
And that's because I've made going to my prayer closet part of my weekday morning routine. Right now, it's just something I do for 5-10 minutes right after I've showered.
3) Have a prayerful attitude throughout the day.
Prayer isn't limited to a fixed time at a certain point in the day. I find myself often continuing my prayer conversations with God throughout the day.
I think of it as a blanket I try to keep over my mind as I encounter different issues, for example:
- When anger threatens my heart;
- When my husband acts differently than I'd expected; or
- When I'm tempted to depression or to lose my joy.
Keep the conversation with God going in your mind. And He will be there with you to answer!
4) Keep your heart honest and authentic for powerful daily prayers.
Be careful to not fall into the habit of praying empty words or phrases that have little meaning or depth. Sometimes we get into these habits because we've “always said those things” or we hear others saying them.
Remember, you're in a conversation, so say what you would in conversation! When things aren't flowing and I feel like I need to know what to say, I try to follow the ACTS acronym: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication.
5) Listen to God for answers to your prayers.
Prayer is a two-way conversation. Although I have never heard the audible voice of God, He will often place certain scriptures in my mind that will give me guidance or assurance while I'm praying.
However, if we're just there to present our “requests” and to leave, it's easy to miss His side of the conversation.
Don't be afraid to linger. To look through the Bible as you're praying. To have a journal nearby so that you can not only write down your prayers but write down the phrases/scriptures He will bring to your heart if you can quiet yourself enough to listen to the Holy Spirit.
This is one of the best parts of prayer!
6) Keep asking and keep searching for resolution.
Don't give up! I love the acronym “PUSH”–Pray Until Something Happens.
No matter how long we pray or what we learn about prayer, there will always be a great mystery to it.
And honestly, it's a great thing that's prayer cannot be fully understood because that means that it's not something we can manipulate and control as humans.
It's a God-based endeavor, and thus, we can't ever fully understand it!
However, Jesus himself tells us to “keep on asking, seeking and knocking on the door” to find the peace and answers we need (Matthew 7:7, Luke 18:1-6).
Choose to Pursue a More Powerful Daily Prayer Life
If we want to live on purpose for God and want to raise children who will change the world, we absolutely have to make powerful prayer a priority.
If we see don't harness this power as a mom, we will miss prayer's greatest treasures–not just answered prayer itself, but the amazing process of connecting with God and growing to trust Him by daily lifting our concerns to Him.
Right now, I encourage you to begin a habit of discovering a powerful prayer life!

You’re welcome! I’m so glad that this post spoke to you about how to have a more powerful prayer life and to grow closer to God. May God bless you as you spend time in prayer with Him!
I like your suggestion to have an attitude of prayer throughout the day instead of limiting ourselves to fixed times. Additionally, it’s a good idea to find a prayer box to give you ideas about spiritual empowerment and how to incorporate it into your life. Your article had some great and unique insight about powerful prayer, so thanks for taking the time to share!
Hi Delia! Thank you so much for your encouragement! Yes, being a mom is NOT an easy task. Every day God reminds me of how much I need to depend on Him to not just survive but thrive as a mom. Congrats on your new blog! I will check it out!
Wow! What a beautiful story, Brooke! And what a powerful calling you’ve been given to minister to those five boys! I have four kids myself (three of them boys) so I can *almost* understand. LOL I’m so glad that this is helpful to you as you begin praying regularly for your family! May God bless you!
First of all thank you so much for doing this. I am a single mother of five boys. So as you can imagine I am extremely busy. So in trying to get my attention God has been waking me up at one two or three every morning for the past few days. I now know why. I have always believed in the power of prayer and I know it is a gift not to be taken lightly. And I have heard many stories of people making huge changes in their lives and in the lives of others. But I have never been really shown how to do it. Or maybe I have and this was just broken down and worded to where the light bulb clicked on this time. I know now and understand how to use my three am awakenings. So again thank you so much for saying yes and writing this.
I couldn’t agree more with everything you said in this article! I really believe prayer is vital in our spiritual life.but like you said, as a mom it gets so hard! I really enjoyed reading your tips . I also have a section on my blog about spirituality,religion and God.my blog is still very new,so if it’s possible,I would appreciate so much any kind of support http://www.delia-in-a-nutshell.com

Awesome! Thanks, Ginger!! I’m glad you were encouraged and hope you enjoy Fervent! 🙂
Yes, I love that constant dialog with God… it’s amazing that we can have that close connection with Him, any time of the day! Thanks for sharing your story! 🙂
Prayer is such a gift. Enjoyed your tips today. I’m looking forward to reading Fervent. Linking with you at Grace and Truth today.
Good Morning from your next door neighbor over at Lyli’s!
Thanks for tackling a great big subject. I find myself praying without ceasing more and more. As God brings someone or a situation to mind, we’re dialogue-ing back and forth. I’m learning to listen more … and speak less. He’s always whispering something, isn’t He …
Thank you for sharing your tips to Powerful Prayer with us at Over the Moon.
Me too!
Agreed, Michele! Prayer allows us to actually do something about what’s going on in the world around us. Thanks for sharing!
Great encouragement! I’m focusing on my prayer life this year, and am finding that there is a lot of praying that can be done during the little minutes when I’m alone. Much better than listening to the news!
Thank you so much! 🙂
Awesome!!! What a beautiful story about your husband! How amazing and I’m sure a huge answer to prayer! I’m so blessed to hear your testimony, and that the post encouraged you so much! May God bless you as you begin making prayer a habit again.
Hi Lisa! YES! I am a huge Priscilla Shirer fan too! And Stormie is great. Her books were the first ones to teach me about the power of prayer. I totally agree that prayer is not an easy thing to always make time for, but when I do, oh, how my days seem to go smoother. And, yes, having a prayerful attitude throughout the day keeps my heart in check about what God wants to do through me and through the situations I face. He is so good to be there whenever we call on Him!
Thank you for sharing your post with us at Snickerdoodle Sunday! Pinning to share with others.
First off, I LOVE all of the books you’ve mentioned in this post. The movie the War Room has quickly become one of my all time favorite movies! I am a strong believer in prayer too. I do try to pray daily, but I have noticed I’m doing it as often as I was in the past. I need to get back on that bandwagon.
This is especially true now that my husband is starting to reach out to God for the first time since I’ve known him which is over 20+ years. So, I feel like I truly need to show God’s love and become an example of his teachings even more!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful post and video on the #MondayMotivationParty! It has truly touched my soul in a good way.
I LOVE Fervent!! (I love anything by Priscilla Shirer, actually.) I’m also a big fan of Stormie Omartian. Her Power of a Praying Wife helped me tremendously in my marriage. Instead of stewing, nagging, or growing resentful about things I can’t change, I now take my frustrations to the One who is greater than I!
This was a wonderful list of tips. Prayer is so vital – I could not do this motherhood thing without it! – but it is hard to make the time and find the energy. I especially liked the tip about having a prayerful attitude throughout the day. “A blanket I keep over my mind” … I’m going to have to remember that!
This was wonderful, I would love to see a printout with all the information so I can refer back to your tips!!
